Weltanschauung: Four-fold-table

Returning to the world-view after two and half months.

Cleaned up an old sketch of that four-fold table above from my notebook. Using it as a tool for thought, hope it works for you too. Axial topology offers what one would expect – typical left-right, up-down classification. Then, I'm using circles to represent the strength of faith: smaller the circle, more defined and stronger the faith. Then I exemplary populated the table off the top of my head.

What's most interesting to me is the notion of faith. Faith in anything: one god, absence of god, market economics, unconditional love. Regardless of its denomination, praxis is built on faith.

Where there is faith – there will be chutzpah, sisu, cojones.

True, faith is a many-splendored thing.
I have known people who's faith is based on wealth, race, fashion, even blood type or diet.
Whatever it is, it never ceases to fascinate.

Your's truly, habitual outsider.

Ps. if this sounds as ridiculous
as i think, remove this.

No – if I did that, then I'd have to delete the whole blog too.

Excellent! I like the map a lot! I think quite crucial to reading it, is knowing the worldview of the person who made it. A militant theist would probably draw something very different. But I guess this one is supposed to be personal, and we all know where you sit on it :)

So, does everyone have to have some faith, just to exist? I guess at least everyone on the map have some sort of faith.

Maybe it's just me or maybe i'm just in a pseudo-philosophical mood (always, actually) but i have this "feeling" that everybody needs some
Faith (in something, U name it!) in order to BE.

If one doesn't believe in something, does one have even a simplest chance to develop a personality? In example: If i don't have a
creed like "this is how i am, or this is the way the World wags", then how can one truly relate with anything?

well, this is only vaguely about the concept of faith, but i need somebody tho share this:
(sorry Mesq, u have been chosen...)

Just minutes ago i had a fight of the century
(still steaming!) about faith vs. reality.

maybe i'm either naive or cynical, but isn't
the very concept of "reality" actually just
a matter of Faith? What defines "REALITY"?
Is it because one can prove something about it
scientifically? Many things can be proved but also denied by the very same results, depending on point of wiew and re-settig the question, whatever that might be. I know, this is just invalid tongue-lashing, written by a 3rd rate semi-intellect but rejoice! i'll end this epistole very soon.

Conclusion: i prefer "Faith" because it's very basic element is the possibility of being wrong.
Faith ain't for sissies,
And that makes life sooo much spicier...

(yes i know, nothing much of a writing but i'll
promise i'll leave this matter now and for all.
Hmm, did i actually say something or is this really just ravings of an overworked gnat?)

Oy vey, whatever...

My two cents: I think most political or philosophical persuasions require faith too. Speaking as a socialist-anarcho-syndicalist pacifist a belief in the possibility of bettering human existence, requires a lot of faith. Especially after reading tabloid news with your morning coffee.

Karstein on 29 Jul 2007 | Permalink

And, where there is faith, there will always be manipulators, that's the downside to it.

Us norwegians now have a princess selling courses in communicating with angels for 3.500 € a pop.

ml on 29 Jul 2007 | Permalink

True. A believer (whatever that belief/Faith might be)can be very vulnerable, or sometimes even "an open invitation" to manipulation.

The more sincere you are, the more trustfull you are, thence the more "attractive" you are. Unfortunately not only to your fellow believers, but to predators as well.

No matter if one's Faith is religious, political
(U name it...) there will always be someone
who gains more influence/prestige than others.
That leads to matters of power & whatsthatbloodywordinenglish...?, oh, nevermind.
And, as all who have read "The Uncanny X-men"
know: "Power corrupts, and infinite power corrupts infinitely".(Who said it? Xavier?)

In short, every silver lining appears to need a cloud.

Oh, Lord, i've been preaching banalities again.
NOW i'll stop & remain silent till i have something really new & fresh to say.
(Should be FOREVER, but... :( )

Sooo sorry, Mesq. I'm afraid i'll owe you a
very large one in Pikkulintu.Or whichever place
pleaseth thee best.

PS! Karsten: 2 cents? more like 2 Quarters,
and value still rising.

Karstein on 29 Jul 2007 | Permalink

ML: I'll gladly join you at Pikkulintu to cash that one in ;)

ml on 2 Aug 2007 | Permalink

Karstein: Agreed. Mesq, hope You'll find
some time to join in.

Mesq on 2 Aug 2007 | Permalink

Absolutely, time and space permitting. Been a bit overloaded.. or at least a bit off-balance meanwhile, so thanks for taking up the discussion!

A bit of Koyaanisqatsi, then?
Wish You'll have some time for creative
leisure ahead. Or just leisure; You deserve it.

Mesq on 5 Aug 2007 | Permalink

Thanks, that "deserved" part doesn't apply though.

ml on 6 Aug 2007 | Permalink

Re-define that concept of "deserving" something,
please... Some kind of vacation is clearly in demand.

Mesq on 8 Aug 2007 | Permalink

Kajaanin skutsi... I am afraid, I won't make it to the summery lakes in time. But the Oder-Neiße tour will not be a bit worse. As soon as I get some spare 22" tubes, it's close to go.

Well, thank you Peter, I came up with the drawing. Then we've had this nice follow-up discussion.
